The Tahajjud prayer is one of the most beloved voluntary prayers to Allah. The best time for it is during the last third of the night, before the time of Fajr begins.
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “Our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, comes every night down on the nearest Heaven to us when the last third of the night remains, saying: ‘Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?'” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1145)
In Islam, midnight is not automatically 12:00 AM. It is exactly half the duration between Maghrib and Fajr. According to the majority of scholars, the time for Isha prayer strictly ends at Islamic Midnight, so it must be prayed before this time.
